Mr. Soumen Bagchi is the current ambassador of India to Iraq. Prior to this assignment, he has served overseas at Indian Missions in Brussels, Dhaka and San Francisco. He has served in India in the Ministry of External Affairs as a Regional Passport Officer, Director, Joint Secretary and Additional Secretary. He has handled work related to counter-terrorism, energy security, investment and technology promotion, SAARC & BIMSTEC groupings, India’s relations with countries of South-east Asia, and of West Africa. Most recently, he served as deputy & acting Director General of the Indian Council of World Affairs, a New Delhi based foreign affairs think-tank.

He joined the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) New Delhi for a degree of Bachelor of Technology, and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta for a PGDM (MBA) degree. He speaks Hindi, Bengali, English & French. He is unmarried and belongs to Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
